Tomken Super-Duty Rear Bumper & Tire Carrier - Reviews

Customer Rating Great idea, poor execution, terrible service

Bought Jeep w/Tomken bumper and swingout installed, no tire carrier upright. Liked the setup well enough, but old style with hard to remove pin and 1/2" hardware at pivot is less than ideal. Removed swingout and brackets, upgraded bushings, replaced pivot bolt with SS and added grease fitting to lube. When reassembling I realized how poorly engineered the system was but was finally able to get it lined up well enough to work. Ordered upright from Tomken and was told it was a special order and would take two weeks. That's ok, paid and waited. Four weeks later I had to contact them to see where it was and they told me "so sorry,it is on it's way". When the piece arrived I started to mock it up for install only to realize that the mounting hole alignment wasn't even close and without substantial modding on my part, it was useless. BOO!

I originally had front and rear bumpers and a tire carrier. The front and rear bumpers started rusting under the powdercoat. then the tire carrier hinge wallered out I now have this crap off my jeep and would never suggest or allow any friend to have one of these..

Customer Rating Great Combo

I put on the rear bumper, tire carrier, and fuel/water can holders. Did some pretty serious wheeling with cans loaded and 33" spare hanging on the back. No problems...the latch works well, no rattles, very solid feeling carrier. Bumper supported the weight of the jeep on a couple of occasions (better than my stock rockers).

Customer Rating Happy with improvement

I had looked around and did a lot of reading and in the meantime Tomken upgraded the swing out tire carrier. GREAT IMPORVEMENT They changed to a cam over latch and from a 1/2" bolt to a 3/4" bolt and bushing on the swing end and it is greasable now. I also have the rocky rack with the new cam over latch. I love the look and over all performance of the system. I wheeled all summer with the rack fully loaded, 35" spare and a full can of gas and have had no porblems. NO Rattle IT IS Great. Tomken keep up the good work on improvements.

Customer Rating Nice HD bumper, but sacrifices departure angle

I really liked that my '01 TJ came w/ the Tomken bumpers front and rear. I added the swingout afterward along with the Rocky Rack for cargo and the Hi-lift mount.

As good as the bumper is, the swingout is bad. I probalby would not purchase it again.

Specific bad points:

1. Departure angle with the swingout mount is bad. It sticks out another 4" at bumper height.
2. The hinge is weak. After putting my gear in the rack and hitting a couple trails in Moab, the bushing wallowed out and the whole thing wobbles now. The gear was not very heavy - tent, sleeping bags, camp stuff. I lifted the bag over my head without trouble, so should not be a overburden problem.
3. The security of the swingout staying closed is great, but it is a pain in the arse to unscrew the knob everytime I want to get in the back. A quicker clamp or pin type closure would be better.

Again - Bumper excellent; swingout tire carrier poor.
