Kilby Gas Tank Skid - Reviews
More Solid Than A Rock! | |

After denting my factory skid on a pile of dirt, I installed the KILBY in my '97 TJ. WOW!!! I've wheeled it several times since. I'll tell you.... when you have 200' of muddy water to go through an you're leading the pack, it's nice to have the confidence of the KILBY to power through. I came down on it so hard a few time it made my teeth chatter. Upon inspection, all I had to show for it was scratches. "No gas, no go." The Kilby will keep you going.

I installed the Kilby gas tank skid on my 05 TJ and really am impressed. I already had a one inch BL so there was plenty of clearance to work with. All of the holes on the Kilby skid lined up perfectly - I didn't have to pry , flex, or bend anything to get it in. I had about a half a tank of gas so I just used a floor jack and blocking to do the install. I was able to do the whole thing alone in a couple of hours. The only things that concern me are the added weight of the skid and the fact that there is no fuel pump sump. Both of these things are actually good in a way, though. The skid HAS to be heavy... Otherwise it would not be so effective. The weight is just a given for a good skid. I'm going to try to replace some of the bolts with grade 8 bolts - we'll see how that goes. I'm a little worried about the originals being overloaded. The other thing (no pump sump) means maximum ground clearance. It does put some strain on the center of the tank, though... So I put some solid rubber pads on each side of the tank to raise it about a quarter inch (any more and the straps won't fit). Also, don't tighten the straps too tight. Once done, the skid provided great ground clearance and a really nice departure angle. I am very happy with the Kilby skid. |

The only reason I only gave it nine stars is because I haven't run the trails with it yet. I picked it up last week and installed it on my '01 TJ. Removing my dented stock skid, the Kilby unit installed very easily. It was a surprisingly easy install. The most difficult part being the balancing of a 1/2 tank of gas while doing the install (thanks to my well intentioned brother). After the install, I have gained almost 1" of clearance over my stock skid and major protection for my gas tank. I have no doubt this skid will hold up to anything thrown at it. I looked at several different designs and going with one that replaces the stock skid while increasing protection is definitely the way to go. I'm looking forward to my next trip to the Rubicon to test out the strength of this skid!

I wrote the review in regards to the awesome clearance gain (From San Diego). I had the opportunity to test the skid on the infamous Pole Line run during a three day excursion in the badlands of Baja Mexico. On several occasions I bashed my gas tank skid during this wheeling trip. Jeepers behind me commented on how solid the skid was constructed when they saw the Jeep fall hard on several large rocks. During some night wheeling I got high centered on my gas tank skid, the gas tank skid took it like a champ and I was winched off. The powdercoating on the Kilby Skid is barely scuffed. A great solid product!

The install was a snap. I got more clearance. It's defiantely heavy duty. But, Now I am forced to advertise KILBY on the back of my skid plate, that part sucks.

Fantastic clearance gains over stock.

I'm running an 05 LJ and just recently replaced my Skid Row gas tank skid with the Kilby. The clearance gains I got by installing the Kilby are fantastic. I changed from the SR to the Kilby because the SR hung kind of low as it fit over the stock gas tank skid. For those with an 03+ Jeep a 1" BL is required to run the Kilby. IMHO the addition of a 1" BL to run the Kilby is well worth it. Don't be afraid of dropping the tank, just take your time and have a friend help and you will have no problems. The install was rather easy, it took 3 or 4 hours with a lunch break and we were taking our sweet time. Well worth the effort to drop the take for such a substantial gain in clearence. I measured from the ground to the bottom of the gas tank today and I have 15" of clearence. That is with BFG AT 32's, OME 2.5" HD with 3/4" spacers all around. Measure you gas tank skid and see how far off the ground it is.

I had mine on an '01, and transferred it to my '05 Rubicon. Piece of cake to install. If you manage to damage it, the rest of your jeep must be a total loss! I got rear-ended when I had my rear bumper off. Scuffed it up a little. I figure it did a couple grand worth of damage to the car that hit me. Love the extra clearance. Great job Brad! |

Rock Solid Skid Plate | |

I bought my Kilby back in the day when they came unfinished and were about the only really good skid plate on the market. I am very pleased with mine and it has held up extreamly well on the trail but for the price, I would probably recommend going with a Warn skid now. By the looks of it, the design is basically the same, comes powder coated and is considerably cheaper.
