Detroit Electrac Locker - Reviews

Customer Rating Electrac finally finished

This Detroit has gave me issues day 1 and i am finally tired of baby sitting the locker. A stronger inner spring, spacer, works one day and not the next. You need only generic oil to work. I need to drive 50 plus miles to have it start working after maintenance, The installers all say it doesn't work. Finally i think i broke something when i was wedged in some rocks and turned it off trying to move one side, ever since, no locker. All i did was turn it off and on.

This Locker while great when it works (2 stars instead of 1) it just does not work very often. I purchased it in 2004 and have never actually had it work for more then a year at a time. I am an avid 4x4 person and need a locker I can count on. I have had to replace it once in 2005 and have had to contact Eaton at least 10 times to help solve problems. In Eatons own words " we don't make this type of locker any more because of the issues". Look at a ARB or an OX !

This locker was easy to install, not that I did the work myself. Not the cheapest locker in the world, but worth it in my opinion. The ability to force it into locked / unlocked, should the electronic portion fail, is great for on trail recovery (not available in OX / ARB selectables). The only problem I had is that the internal yolk needs to be adjusted to 0.05" tollerances, and my shop didn't get it right the first time, so it wouldn't unlock properly. A quick visit back, no problems. The locker is strong, and the limited slip feature in the un-locked version is nice - be careful in the snow though. Switch can be installed anywhere, and the whole product jusut strikes me as being well made. Caution - in the Dana 44 rear, bolt sizes have changed since 2002 or something. I had to have my electrac mounting holes custom machined out to fit the diff, a little extra $$ but no biggie.
